19,002…but not for long. Thats how many points John Shurna of the Northwestern Wildcats has scored in his career, and he’s not done yet. But that number is significant, because with a three pointer from the top of the key against Minnesota, John Shurna moved his name to the top of the Northwestern All-Time Scoring list. And yet, his name might be just abscure as Billy McKinney…the Wildcat that he past.
Shurna has been starting games for the Wildcats since he was a freshman. By his sophomore season, he led the Wildcats in both scoring and rebounding. He is currently the Big Ten leader 20+ point games with 36. As Shurna goes, the Wildcats go. And up to this point he has taken the Wildcats to places they’ve never gone. With back-to-back 20 win seasons and postseason appearances (NIT), the Northwestern basketball program, led by #24 (Shurna’s number, in case you didn’t know) only has one more mountain to climb. The ultimate goal for a program looking for their spot on the Illinois basketball landscape…An invitation to the NCAA Tournament.
So let this article serve as a notice, if you haven’t done so yet, turn a Northwestern basketball game in the next week or two. You’ll not only get a chance to watch a historic scorer, you also may be witnessing a historic first for ”Chicago’s Big Ten team”.
Northwestern is set to battle #11 Michigan tonight in Evanston. The Wildcats have won 4 of their last 6. Hungry for more…visit the school’s official website for all things Wildcat basketball.
